Affleck appeared as extra with Matt Damen in the movie The Field of Dreams. He and his best friend Matt Damon wrote the original screenplay for and starred in Good Will Hunting. He shared and received Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the movie.

He reached the peak of his career with successful movies like Armageddon, Forces of Nature, Pearl Harbor, Changing Lanes, The Sum of All Fears and Daredevil. Though these movies rose him to Hollywood Leading Man in the early 2000s, there were a string of flops which included Gigli, and surviving Christmas.
He made a comeback with the film Hollywoodland in September 2006. His performance was appreciated and he won the Volpi Cup for the Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival and and has also won the Best Supporting Actor award at the Hollywood Film Festival and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. This is his first major role considered to be in contention for an Academy Award for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor.
